We start with the ship. Our presenters describe the vessels and vessel traffic on our waterways, with maritime experts providing details on piloting and navigation of vessels. Then we move on to the roles of vessel agents and regulators play in enabling a ship to move from port to port. Shipping 201 is the second course in the Shipping Education Series! Courses can be taken in any order, and are designed for both new and experienced Maritime industry professionals.

By the end of this course, the student will be more familiar with: - Merchants Exchange Overview: An overview of the role of the Merchants Exchange and information services that enable ships on the River system to move from port to port. - Vessels on our Waterways: An overview of Columbia River ship traffic and activity and an overview of the movements of towboats on the River system. - Roles and Duties of a Vessel Agent: An introduction to the Columbia River Steamship Operators’ Association and the role of a vessel agent. An overview of the duties of a vessel agent working for a tramp vessel agency from charterer appointment to post departure. - Pilotage: Columbia River Bar Pilots and Columbia River Pilots: Representatives from both the Columbia River Bar Pilots and the Columbia River Pilots give an introduction to what a maritime pilot does, as well as their organizations and the services they provide. - Regulators Responsibility: Regulators from the U.S. Coast Guard, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, Washington Department of Ecology, Maritime Fire & Safety Association come together to provide a summary of the kinds of regulation and responsibility present on the River system.
All course materials will be provided for students during the seminar. A Student Resource Guide will also be provided to take home along with a Certificate of Completion.
